Ashley Bayes was one of Graham Westley’s first signings in his second stint as Boro manager. The well travelled goalkeeper signed from fellow Blue Square Premier side Crawley Town after rejecting a new contract at the Broadfield Stadium.

After starting his career at Brentford, Bayes moved down to the South West and joined Torquay United where he played 97 times for the Gulls. He then moved to rivals Exeter City where he was a firm favourite with the fans before leaving in 1999 to return to London with Leyton Orient. After 3 years at Brisbane Road a move to Ireland followed where he won the Irish league with Bohemians.

His stay in Ireland was short lived though and Bayes returned to the South East of England and joined Conference side Woking. After a successful season at Kingfield, a move to big spending Hornchurch followed, but after the Essex clubs financial collapse, Bayes was on the move again this time down the road to neighbours Grays Athletic before a further switch to Crawley Town.

He joined Stevenage in 2008 and although he was the first choice at first, manager Graham Westley signed Chris Day and Bayes has been the second choice ever since.
