Stevenage signed Tim Sills as they looked to strengthen their squad ahead of the run in to the 2009/2010 season. Sills started his career in the non league at Camberley Town, before moving to Basingstoke. After 3 seasons at Basingstoke, Sills moved to Kingstonian where he spent a prolific season in 2002/2003. After impressing with the K’s, Sills earned a move to Conference outfit Aldershot Town. Again Sills impressed and was apart of the successful side that Terry Brown built at the Recreation Ground.
After 3 successful seasons at Aldershot, Oxford United paid out £50,000 to secure the signature of Sills. He went full time, but found the step up difficult. He scored just 1 goal in 13 appearances for the U’s before he was released. He went on to sign for Hereford United, but again found things difficult in League 2. Sills made 36 appearances, but only scored twice. He left Edgar Street after just 1 season and moved to Devon and Torquay United.
It was at Plainmoor where Sills started to enjoy his football again. After failed moves at Oxford and Hereford, Sills was back scoring again in the Blue Square Premier. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get Torquay back into the football league at the first attempt, but the following season that dream was realised and the Gulls and Sills were back after beating Cambridge in the play-off final. Sills scored the second. After promotion, Sills again found opportunities limited and he moved to Stevenage in January 2010 to help try and secure promotion for the Hertfordshire side.
Sills’ contribution to the title winning side shouldn’t be underestimated. His experience helped Boro enormously during the run-in and he has proved to be an important element in the squad. He is very clever on and off the ball and sometimes other members of the squad fail to read what he is going to do. He linked up well with Yemi in certain games, but often his flick-ons and hold up play go unnoticed. He will be a valuable player for us next season.
