Last Minute Equaliser Halts Boro

Posted by lopo1 on 07/10/2009

After a fantastic result against local rivals Luton last Tuesday night, Boro returned to action against a much improved York team who found themselves in the playoff places after a poor season last year. Martin Foyle has signed some good players over the summer and have certainly made a claim to be this years surprise package.

Going into Saturday’s game Boro had been 8 games unbeaten. Despite poor performances and results at home to Grays and Altrincham we were still in the hunt. Boro made an unchanged team to Tuesdays game with Luton with Charlie Griffin partnering Chris Beardsley upfront and loanee Michael Brough at right back as Ronnie Henry once again missed out with injury. York included former Ebsfleet player Michael Gash and Neil Barrett alongside ex St Albans defender Djoumin Sangare and experienced midfielder Andy Ferrell.

On a cold and blustery day in Yorkshire my expectations were fairly high but considering York’s start it was always going to be difficult. Boro started well and kept York’s attacks to a minimum despite the referees best efforts to keep stopping the game. Charlie Griffin was unlucky to have a goal chalked off for offside after a good swivel and shot ended up in the back of the net only to see the offside flag go up very quickly. But the windy conditions fell in Boro’s favour first as an Andy Drury corner which held up in the York 6 yard box was headed into his own net by Danny Parslow to give Boro the lead in a very even first half. It was Mitchell Cole’s turn to have a goal disallowed after good work on the right by Charlie Griffin and his cross tapped in by Cole was again judged to be offside by the linesman on the far side.

The second half seemed to be very similar to the first as Michael Ingham made a good save from Andy Drury as both teams struggled with the blustery conditions. Mark Roberts and Michael Bostwick were kept busy keeping substitute Michael Rankine and Richard Brodie quiet but York started to look more likely time went on. Boro gave appearances to Yemi Odubade and Eddie Odhiambo who replaced Drury and Cole. Yemi nearly found himself through on goal but a last ditch tackle from the impressive Sangare who certainly kept Beardsley and Griffin from doing anything in the second half.

Westley then brought Mark Albrighton on to replace Chris Beardsley which seemed to pen Boro further back and invite more and more pressure. 5 minutes were added on at the end and in the end the pressure told and Djoumin Sangare impressive throughout scored a fierce header to give York a point.

At the end I walked out feeling disappointed that we were unable to hang on and grab victory but before the game I would of taken a draw and going into a spell of home games in the next few weeks we are still well placed to push on.
