14 games and counting…

Another game and another win for Stevenage as Weymouth were brushed aside at the Wessex Stadium on Saturday. Boro are now back up to 3rd in the Blue Square Premier table and are becoming serious contenders for the promotion spots come the end of the season. Graham Westley’s side are gaining in confidence in every game they play and troubled Weymouth did little to get in Boro’s way as another 3 points were won away from home. Again the Boro boss decided to stick with the same side that beat Burton in the FA Trophy a couple of weeks back, with new signing Jon Ashton not even included in the 16.

It was a slow start for Boro, who after a week or two without action due to the recent poor weather looked rusty. According to Westley, training has even been an issue with some sessions having to be cancelled. Boro, though were never in danger of losing that 14 game unbeaten run and dominated throughout. It took a while before they opened the scoring, but once Andy Drury had done that just before half-time, then there was only going to be 1 winner. A mistake by ex Boro defender Santos Gaia let Boylan through and his shot was blocked, but went straight to Drury who smashed home the opener. Drury is a player who has grown into this Boro side. When he signed I never thought he would be a regular, but after recent performances, he seems to have made that right midfield position his own.

Boro went into the break 1 up. The second half was similar to the first, again with Boro on top, but failing to add to their 1 goal. It wasn’t until late on when Drury set up Morison to get Boro’s second that ultimately killed the game. Keeping Morison in the January transfer window might just be the best business Stevenage have done for a long while. His goals could win Stevenage promotion to League 2? Michael Bostwick added a third which gave Boro a well deserved 3-0 win. Bostwick getting forward to latch on to a Vincenti flick on and fire past the Weymouth keeper.

A comprehensive victory which will only boost the confidence in the club further. Next up for Stevenage is a home tie against Forest Green in the FA Trophy, weather permitting. I know the club wants a run in the trophy and getting through to the next round is a high possibility with FGR not having the greatest season so far and Boro flying high at the minute. I just wonder with the chance of reaching the play-offs getting ever closer, maybe GW will begin to prioritise with his squad selection and rest a couple on Saturday?
