Snow causes postponement of FGR game

After a week of heavy snow, nightmare trips to work and games being called off due to the poor weather there really isn’t much to talk about at the moment. The country seems to have ground to a halt and it looks like Boro have too. The biggest news coming out of Broadhall Way this week was the two new dates for the York and Forest Green games respectively. The York game at Bootham Crescent, which was originally penciled in for the 31st January will now be played on the 31st March at 7.45pm. As for the Forest Green game which was called off at the weekend, the re-arranged fixture is this Tuesday, again with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Of course with snow still falling in the Hertfordshire area and heavy snow showers forecasted on Tuesday I’m doubtful the game will actually be on. It’s been snowing more or less non stop for about a week now and doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. With this in mind, it looks likely that Boro’s next game will be against Weymouth on the 14th. A Valentines trip to the south coast sounds good for the in-form Boro to pick up another 3 points.

Away from the snow and new signing Jon Ashton has been talking to the Comet about his move to Boro and his chances of getting into the first team. Ashton’s move to Broadhall Way was one of the highlights of the January transfer window for Boro, who now must boast one of the best backlines outside the football league. I expect Ashton to partner Mark Roberts in the long term with either Ronnie Henry or Eddie Anaclet playing at right back and Scott Laird on the left. With Chris Day in goal, that defence will be pretty hard to break down and may help get Boro into the play-offs?

“He is a fabulous athlete. His strength and his pace are undoubted. You only need to look at his face to see that he will put his body in the way for the team. He has got a lot of quality about him. He played at right back for me at Rushden and he’s also played a centre half. He’s got the quality to go forward as well. He is good at set plays so he brings a lot of strengths.” Graham Westley on Ashton

The Ashton-Roberts partnership could be a good one. Where Roberts lacks is maybe his pace, but with Ashton sweeping from behind, the two should work well together. It reminds me of when Mark Smith and Efe Sodje were here. Smith wasn’t the quickest of defenders, but any mistake he made was recovered by Sodje who was lightning across the ground. That partnership helped Boro win the league in 1996. Can this one win promotion to the football league in 2009?

UPDATE: Forest Green game called off due to waterlogged pitch. No new date for re-arranged game as of yet.
