Mills v Martin

John Martin was transfer listed last week as it seems Graham Westley prefers playing Gary Mills alongside either Michael Bostwick or Peter Vincenti in the Boro midfield. I thought it would be interesting to see how Boro perform when either Mills or Martin are selected. Below are their stats for the season so far.

Gary Mills

Played: 16
Won: 4
Drew: 3
Lost: 9

Win percentage: 25%

It couldn’t of been a worse start to a Boro career for Gary Mills. His debut was a 5-0 defeat away at Wrexham and it seems that Boro are more likely to lose when he is playing. 56% of the games that Mills has featured in this season have ended in defeat and the 4 games that Boro have won with Mills in the side, 3 of them have been by a one goal margin. Boro are far less creative with Mills in the side.

John Martin

Played: 9
Won: 5
Drew: 1
Lost: 3

Win percentage: 56%

Interestingly in the 9 games that Martin has played in, Boro have won 56% of them and that includes a 4 game run where Boro scored 12 goals. Martin wasn’t in a losing Boro team until October when Torquay won 3-0 at Plainmoor. Since then it seems that Martin’s influence in the team has dipped and Boro have only won 1 of the next 3 games that Martin has played in. You have to wonder if it that is the reason why Martin has been transfer listed?

So why has GW opted to transfer list the more creative midfielder? Is there going to be a change in the way Boro play? Who knows, but I think I know what player I would rather have in the Boro midfield at the moment.
