The Captaincy

Posted by sgmboro on 12/11/2008

Who would you choose?Stevenage have had a number of skippers leading the team out this season and at the moment Steve Morison is the man that Graham Westley believes is best suited to that role. Mark Albrighton was appointed captain in the summer after his move from Cambridge United. He replaced Ashley Westwood who then manager Peter Taylor installed as captain last season. Albrighton though struggled with his form at the beginning of the season and asked for the captaincy to be stripped from him so he could concentrate on his own form. This led to Ronnie Henry being given the armband again after previous stints as Boro’s leader.

Henry was captain when Boro had their good run of form earlier in the season, but as results began to become more inconsistent the defence was being criticised and Henry was dropped after the defeat away to Eastbourne. It’s not clear whether GW dropped him because of poor performances or because he introduced Gary Mills as ‘Gary Westley’ live on Setanta Sports. I know that, especially after his last spell, that sort of behaviour is not tolerated by Westley and it is possible that is the real reason for why Albrighton was recalled to centre half to partner Luke Oliver.

So with Mark Albrighton not wanting the added responsibility and Ronnie Henry seemingly out of favour with the boss, Boro have turned to their top scorer, Steve Morison to skipper the side. Morison isn’t what you would call an old fashioned captain. Usually it’s the one of the defenders who oversees his side in battle, but Westley has opted to use his star player instead. Although Morison is quite vocal when playing it’s not usually about the team, it’s about why Anthony Thomas didn’t put him through or why Daryl McMahon didn’t cross it to him. Westley has said before that Moro has very high standards and demonstrates that on the pitch which is good, but I just don’t think he is the ideal captain.

In my opinion Stevenage don’t have a natural captain and haven’t done since Jason Goodliffe left the club in 2006. Ronnie Henry was never vocal enough and I don’t think led by example, although he did lead Boro to winning the FA Trophy at Wembley. I think Boro need to strengthen at the back anyway in January and an experienced centre half with good leadership skills would be top of my list. I think it would inspire some of the less experienced players in the team if we had a defender who has been there and done it and can show the rest of the players by example.
