Boro beat deadline to swoop for Day & Upson

Posted by sgmboro on 01/09/2008

Graham Westley has completed 2 deadline day signings as he finalises his squad for the remainder of 2008. Goalkeeper Chris Day has signed a two year contract with Boro after a 2 game “trial” where he impressed enough to warrant a permanent deal. He was subject of late interest from Northampton Town, who have sold Mark Bunn to Blackburn Rovers, but has committed himself to Boro until 2010. This move now leaves the club with 4 goalkeepers on the books (Bayes, Day, Jordan, Russell) so there may still be movements out of the club before the transfer window shuts at midnight.

Westley has also concluded a deal to bring in 18 year old Ipswich midfielder Edward Upson on loan for 3 months. Upson was in the same youth team as ex Boro player Sammy Moore and scored the goal that won Town the FA Youth Cup in 2005. That team was also managed by Steve Greaves, who is now Boro’s first team coach so I assume he had a big part to play with regards to the move. With David Bridges out until October/November and John Martin also struggling with an eye infection then the midfield did look a bit light. Peter Vincenti has come in recently, but also picked up an injury at Barrow on Saturday. I think Upson will be used mostly as a squad player rather than someone who will play every week, but could make his debut at Kettering tomorrow night.

Boro travel to Kettering tomorrow night, looking to get their second win of the season after a good performance up at Barrow at the weekend. New signing Day looks certain to remain in goal, while Ronnie Henry may return to the starting line up after missing Saturday’s game with illness. Eddie Anaclet and Peter Vincenti are both doubts for the game after being taken off at the weekend. Callum Willock and Steve Morison should continue their partnership up front, with Morison still looking to open his account for the 2008/2009 season.

Kettering are still unbeaten this season, although they have drawn 4 of their first 6 games. They beat Woking 1-0 at Rockingham Road on Saturday thanks to a late goal from John Paul Marna. The Poppies also beat then table toppers Cambridge 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium. So far they have been tough to beat, but maybe aren’t scoring enough. One player that could change that fact is Craig Westcarr who re-joined the club after a “spell” at Stevenage. Westcarr scored his first goal back at Kettering in the 2-0 win at Cambridge and will be looking to add to his tally tomorrow night.

Prediction: Kettering 1-1 Stevenage

DEADLINE DAY UPDATE: Iyseden Christie has joined Kettering on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
