“Be patient” – Westley

Graham Westley has given his monthly view to the Comet. Westley basically makes excuses for why Boro have started poorly and are yet to deliver “attractive” football. He talks about how things take time and for the fans to be patient after a poor start to the new season.

“That does not mean that we will never look to turn teams; playing the ball in behind defences is a good way of stretching the game and allowing the team more space in which to pass the ball and when you have players with the pace of Anthony Thomas and Mitchell Cole, you have to use the weapon of the space in behind.”

I’m pretty sure with this comment and after last week’s interview with the official site, Westley is trying to make out that playing a direct game will improve results. Yes it may well improve results, but his brief at the beginning of the season was to get the team playing an entertaining brand of football. I have yet to see that this season and if results don’t come soon I can see GW resorting to long ball tactics just to get 3 points.

Stevenage’s reserve side kicked off their season last night with a 1-1 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers. Boro fielded first team players such as Lawrie Wilson, Mark Albrighton and Iyseden Christie who need all need games at the moment for different reasons. Chris Day, formerly of Millwall was also between the sticks last night. It’s unclear whether Graham Westley plans to sign the experienced keeper. Wycombe fielded a young team and took the lead thanks to a strike from Rob Rice. Boro equalised with a fantastic goal from young forward Jerome Anderson, who continues to impress at reserve level.

Another keeper that has been on trial this summer at Broadhall Way has moved to Blue Square Premier rivals Cambridge United. Steven Drench played in a number of pre-season friendlies for Boro, but will now be number 2 to another former Stevenage goalkeeper in Danny Potter. Westley seems to have signed Michael Jordan as cover for Bayes, although that is still unconfirmed by the club. Meanwhile young midfielder, Ollie Thorne has rejected the chance of a trial at Stevenage.

In the Blue Square Premier tonight, Wrexham continued their impressive home form and beat Oxford United 2-0. The U’s had Luke Foster sent off early and were soon one nil down after Steve Evans headed in from a corner. Wrexham though couldn’t shake off Oxford until late on when Jefferson Louis scored, against another former club, in the last minute. Wrexham could be very difficult to beat at the Racecourse this season and seem to be picking up draws away from home. I think they will definately be in the play-off shake up come May.
