Boro announce Coaching team

Stevenage Borough last night announced that former Ipswich academy coach Steve Greaves has been appointed as first team coach under the new managerial set up at Broadhall Way. Greaves spent 14 years as a coach at Portman Road after being forced to quit playing football at the age of just 24 after spells with Fulham, Preston North End and Ipswich Town. Greaves surprisingly left his role at Ipswich this summer due the club cutting costs on their academy.
“Greaves is a former Ipswich youth player who returned to the club after a successful non-league career, including a spell with Sudbury, and armed with a host of coaching qualifications that made him ideally qualified for his academy role. The fact that he also ran the reserve side, who won a second successive Pontin’s Holidays East Division title last term, suggested he was climbing the ladder, rather that he would be on his way to coincide with the start of pre-season training.”
By the sounds of it Boro have made a very good appointment here bringing in someone who is on their way up and has a good knowledge of league football. Also don’t be surprised if Greaves uses some of his contacts at Ipswich to help bring in some loan players from Ipswich, could Tommy Smith return for another loan spell at Stevenage?
In other news ex Boro midfielder Mark Hughes is a transfer target for Hertfordshire rivals Barnet. Northern Irish midfielder Hughes joined Boro in January 2007 after a spell with Chesterfield and was a key member of the squad for the run in to that season. It was his free-kick that led to that all important goal in the Trophy Semi against Grays that helped get us to Wembley! I always rated Hughes and thought he could of done a good job for Boro if he was retained last season. However, Mark Stimson decided against keeping him and signed Mark Molesley from Grays instead. Hughes then moved on to Chester where he had a consistent season with the League 2 side.
