Morison signs on

Steve Morison has signed a new 3 year contract with Stevenage, a month after being put on the transfer list at his own request. Moro, who has been the club’s top scorer for the past 2 seasons remains in Hertfordshire after Boro and Crewe couldn’t agree an acceptable transfer fee. The new deal ensures Morison will be with Boro next season, but also has a get out clause which could allow Morison to leave at the end of next season if we fail to get promotion. On the news that Morison had signed a new deal PW said…

We’ve managed to construct a new contract that gives Steve a much improved deal, whilst providing a window for him to move at the end of this season for an agreed fee if we don’t go up. This deal suits everyone and we’re all delighted with the outcome.”

This deal obviously is good for Boro and next season, but with Morison now staying plus the likeliness that he will be one of the first names on Westley’s teamsheet for next season, it leaves a huge selection dilemma with 7 other strikers looking to get into the team. Boro currently have Calum Willock, Craig Westcarr, Lee Boylan, Iyseden Christie, Anthony Thomas as well as youngsters Jerome Anderson and Elliot Buchanan on the books at the moment. The latter two I assume will be allowed to either leave the club or go out on loan, but the others have only recently joined the club and will be looking for first team football. Unless Westley comes in with a new formation I can’t see GW being able to keep 6 strikers, who are all good enough for this level, happy.

“Graham coming into the building as a new manager, with the energy and drive that has accompanied that in the past month, has no doubt also influenced Steve’s decision to sign again. He’s seen the quality of players we’ve signed, met the new lads and can see that it could be a very exciting time to be at Stevenage. He loves the fans and the club and we’re all delighted that we’ve managed to find a way forward that suits everyone.”

Funnily enough most of the players that Westley has bought in were intended to replace Moro and not play with him. Overall though, Morison agreeing to stay at Boro is perhaps the best signing this summer and has kept some sort of continuity at the club. More goals like this in the coming season will be more than welcome.
