Boro bid for Hatswell rejected

Stevenage Borough have failed in a bid for Cambridge defender Wayne Hatswell. The former Forest Green & Rushden defender joined the U’s in January and starred in their run in which ended with a play-off final defeat at Wembley to Exeter City. Hatswell is predomantly a centre back, but can be used a left back if needs be. Obviously we don’t know when the enquiry for Hatswell was rejected, but I think it was probably after we signed Mark Albrighton instead of looking to sign him instead of MA.

I think GW is looking a getting in a new left back and would be happy with Hatswell there. Hatswell is another player who worked with Westley in his short time at Nene Park and is a very reliable defender at this level. I think he’d be a better centre half though than a left back in Westley’s new team model. With GW signing Eddie Anaclet, a pacy wing back, then I think it’s clear that he’s looking at playing an attacking style of football. Hatswell is not a wing back and isn’t the quickest so it might be best if GW carried on looking for that new wing back. Hatswell is well known to fans in the lower leagues for being the scorer of this quite amazing goal.

Elsewhere, Rushden have strengthened their squad with the capture of midfielder Rob Wolleaston from Cambridge United. Wolleaston joins the Northants club for an undisclosed fee after 2 seasons at the Trade Recruitment Stadium. After already signing Daryl Clare and Lee Phillips it looks as if the Diamonds are going to put in a serious bid for promotion this season. With regards to Cambridge, it looks like another important member of their squad has left the club due to cost cutting measures. Vice Captain Mark Albrighton was sold to us last week and the release of 5 players, which included Courtney Pitt haven’t helped matters at either.

Finally, some ex-Boro players signed contracts today. Sammy Moore tied up a deal with Dover, while Simon Wormull and Jean Michel Sigere moved from newly promoted Lewes to newly promoted Eastbourne. Also the club shop re-opened today so membership and season tickets can now be purchased there, as well as the new shirt hopefully sometime this year!

UPDATE: Boro have also had a bid rejected from Cambridge for Lee Boylan.
